Darwin Day

Darwin Day is February 12th, the date of birth of Charles Darwin in the year 1809, at Shrewsbury, England. On this date, and throughout the month, people from all over the world are honoring the life, work and influence of Charles Darwin with events and activities which celebrate science and our shared humanity.
Join in the events and celebrate the adventure of science, and the 'passion to know' that drives us to inquire, explore, and discover what this world is all about.

Contemplate a tangled bank,
clothed with many plants of many kinds,
with birds singing on the bushes,
with various insects flitting about,
and
with worms crawling through the damp earth:
these elaborately constructed forms
have all been produced by laws
acting around us.
Thus, the war of nature,
from famine and death,
the production of higher animals
directly follows.
There is grandeur in this view of life:
whilst the planet has gone
cycling on according to
the fixed law of gravity,
from so simple a beginning
endless forms most beautiful and
most wonderful have been
and are being
evolved.

- Charles Darwin

Philip Appleman is the poet who reset Darwin's lyrical prose into lines of free verse. - I have them on a plaque in my untidy garden.

On the same day over the pond....

Abraham Lincoln, Born Feb. 12, 1809
By Walt Whitman
1819-1892

To-day, from each and all, a breath of prayer--a pulse of thought,
To memory of Him--to birth of Him.
