Advice please
Claudy asks; "Can you recommend any other books by Kipling you think a thirtysomething Australian living in NW England would enjoy?".
She has set herself the admirable limit of reading only pre 1899 books for a year - what a good idea - any suggestions of good reads?

This may seem like an obvious suggestion, but early Holmes. The detective, not Oliver Wendell. They helped me over depression years ago, and I recommend them to clients in a similar boat now. Whenever the absolute worst happens, the Sherlockian can refer to it as merely 'a three-pipe problem', and it won't seem so bad.
