The Italians also thought Britons were tied to outdated traditions and customs.

No point in making a comment about the Vatican, then, if we're talking about outdated institutions...
Were the Colosseum not a major tourist attraction, the Eyeties would have replaced it with a block of workers' apartments long ago.

Also, I take exception to the word "but" in the "funny but drunken" remark.
I'd replace "but" with "especially when", after our last dinner together in the Smoke with you, Ian and Mr. Free Market.
The kids would agree, I'm sure.
