We must put safety before liberty, says Blair

Liberty Quotes & Quotations compiled by GIGA

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
- Benjamin Franklin

Give me liberty, or give me death.
- Patrick Henry, in a speech

Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.
- Patrick Henry

Mr Henry was a Virginian: how many slaves did he own?

Careful Tim, the Home Secretary may come to believe that you *may* be aiding, comforting or encouraging terrorists by publishing such radical words.

And strangely without being judged by 12 of your peers you may find yourself not under "house arrest" but yet strangely confined to your premises without right to trial, communication or any other basic rights that the Home Sec doesn't feel are appropriate to you today...

Someone remind me, when did we vote for 1980's South African standards?

About the same time we voted Blair in, it seems. All this is terribly Animal Farm, don't you think?

Mike,

Having had to read 1984 and Animal Farm for english Lit while it still *was* English Lit you have to wonder if someone saw one or the other of those books as a manual rather than a warning...

Tony has got that all the wrong way round. Surely, my civil liberty would be to plan or not plan what i wish? And most people don't understand or care to understand where this will lead.
People think "i'm not a terrorist, so it doesn't affect me", what they seem to misunderstand is that everyone will be deemed to be a terrorist. Guilty until proven innocent...:(
Since when have people become so complacent with what politicians and those 'from above' throw at them? People have become so complacent, a generation of couch potatos, in body and mind!

Hey, why not send that excellent link of quotations on liberty to our PM?
You can hope to reach him under blairt@parliament.uk (and yes, this is in the public domain, it's from the UK parliament website). Though , if he checks his emails as regularly as Mr BUsh (who remembers Bush's hotmail inbox? :D) then there is not much hope left.......

max!

Tim, you forgot this quote:

All we have of freedom, all we use or know--
This our fathers bought for us long and long ago.

Ancient Right unnoticed as the breath we draw--
Leave to live by no man's leave, underneath the Law--

Lance and torch and tumult, steel and grey-goose wing,
Wrenched it, inch and ell and all, slowly from the King...

There's much more as I am sure you know.

"Guilty until proven innocent." That's basically the French Napoleonic Code of Justice, which informs them and makes their international work seem all ass-backwards?

This is just what we were worried about under the EU constitution, whereby you can be inturned by a foriegn magistrate, without proof for up to 90 days, all this without legal representation, this is forcing EU law through the back door, should be repelled at all cost.

"It is true that liberty is precious; so precious that it must be carefully rationed"

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

"1980s South Africa Standards", Derieme? as far as I remember, they didn't differ from the 1970s/60s etc.

For some reason, my mail above has been attributed to Stuart K Jarman. Sorry, Stuart, don't know how this happened!

The lawyers they conjoin,
Stand up now, stand up now!
The lawyers they conjoin
Stand up now!
To arrest you they advise,
Such fury they divise,
The Devil in them lies,
And hath blinded both their eyes!
Stand up now Diggers all!

The Gentry are all round,
Stand up now, stand up now!
The Gentry are all round,
Stand up now!
The Gentry are all round,
On each side they are found,
Their wisdom so profound,
To cheat us of our ground,
Stand up now, stand up now!

The club is all their law,
Stand up now, stand up now!
The club is all their law,
Stand up now!
The club is all their law,
To keep poor men in awe,
That they no vision saw,
To maintain such a law,
Stand up now Diggers all!

Gerrard Winstanley, 1649.

That Gerrard Winstanley thing wasn't AndyH, it was me. Don't know what happened there. A.
