Offensive Pigs

BBC NEWS | Education | Three Little Pigs 'too offensive'
A story based on the Three Little Pigs has been turned down from a government agency's annual awards because the subject matter could offend Muslims.

The digital book, re-telling the classic fairy tale, was rejected by judges who warned that "the use of pigs raises cultural issues".

The awards which rejected the book are run by Becta, the government's educational technology agency.

The judging panel also attacked the book's stereotyping of builders.

...The Three Little Cowboy Builders has already been a prize winner at the recent Education Resource Award - but its Newcastle-based publishers, Shoo-fly were turned down by the Bett Award panel, run the government's technology agency.

The feedback from the judges explaining why they had rejected the CD-Rom highlighted that they "could not recommend this product to the Muslim community".

They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)".

The judges criticised the stereotyping in the story of the unfortunate pigs: "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"

The book's creative director Ms Price said that rather than preventing the spread of racism, such an attitude was likely to inflame ill-feeling. As another example, she says would that mean that secondary schools could not teach Animal Farm because it features pigs?

Judge for yourself - unlike the BBC I can provide a link that works - it is the unique way I'm funded...

Perhaps I should submit my childrens book; "The Three Whiney Muslims Gruff".
It has everything kids like, blood, gore and people getting thumped.

The actual fact is that political correctness has gone a tad crazy... you can hardly blame Muslims for that :S

Will:
But I DO blame muslims, because their whiney attitudes and default position of threatening mayhem if they are not accomodated is what causes this admittedly stupid knee-jerk political correctness.
If this was the Three Little Cows, do you think it would be banished for fear of offending Hindus?
No, it's the moronic whiney 'slims who do this; even when it's by proxy, it's still down to them.

"unlike the BBC I can provide a link that works - it is the unique way I'm funded..." L, as they say, OL ..!

Since when are young children a part of the Building Trades??

Like Robert my immediate reaction to this was: "why the bloody muslims".

Jews and certain christian sects also regard the pig as unclean and best avoided. As far as I am aware, they have never bitched about fairy tales and Porky the Pig. In fact I don't think the majority of muslims are offended either. I can only assume that they are all intelligent enough to notice the difference between a children's story, a cartoon and being force fed a bacon butty.

The real problem is an unholy alliance of pc morons, fixated about not "offending" anyone (except their own countrymen), and a noisy minority who will use any excuse to further their aim of imposing a mediaeval mindset on other people.

ps Dirtcrashr, just wait until the the entire building trade is taken over by people from the third world. You'll see child labour aplenty. And nobody will do anything, because it's cultural, and you can't offend cultural sensibilities.

When I read this post, I thought, "This must be a parody. There is no way that any awards panel would be this dense." So I clicked on the link and lo and behold, it's real. (Not just because it's on the BBC, of course.) I nearly wept from laughter and shame. Is this what the West has come to?

The pigs bit, okay, I've grown accustomed to that ridiculous gripe. But this really got me:

"Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"

By this criterion, the agency should ban Brokeback Mountain, since it insinuates that all gay people are cowboys. Or The Cosby Show, because it implies that all doctors are black people. Or.... (I can do this all day. So can the government, I'm afraid.)

Clearly the agency was upset not only by the pig references, but the cowboy motif as well. In their eyes, probably the only insult worse than being compared to a pig is to be called a cowboy. Might as well call them the Warmongering American Racists, while you're at it.

What a world....
