Binge drinking Britain: Alcohol fuelled admissions to hospital double - Telegraph

The number of people admitted to hospital because of their drinking has doubled in just over a decade to reach more than 200,000, new figures show.

No they haven't, the way the figures are collected and analyzed has changed. If you are sitting at home on your sofa with a glass of wine and a truck crashes through your wall you are now an alcoholic victim...

It's certainly the kind of thing they would do, but I'm not sure they have. Office of National Statistics made some changes to how they measured alcohol-related deaths in 2006 http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_health/Defining_alcohol-related_deaths.pdf. These, however, didn't make any real difference to the figures and the rise was apparent before. To be fair to them, they seem to be counting alcohol-related deaths in a reasonable and, indeed, sober fashion. Which is more than can be said for the way in which they assess how many units of alcohol we drink.

Unless someone else has another reference...
