Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye

Off to the annual Gentleman's St George's Day lunch - no live blogging this year, and I hope not to fall asleep face down in The Stinking Bishop either. In fact I gather the owner of the Brewery may be bringing a brace of MPs along to demonstrate how Pubs promote sensible drinking and community values. It all may go terribly wrong.

Sensible drinking will be the death of our binge drinking culture.

It were binge drinkers who showered down arrows upon the frogs at Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt. Binge drinkers scampered the decks of the Victory at Trafalgar. Pissheads galloped into the Valley of Death. In the trenches before the the Battle of the Sommes and at Ypres and every other horror nearly a hundred years ago I have no doubt alcohol was quaffed to excess.

From Dunkirk to D-day I suspect an awful lot of ale and wine was quaffed and Churchill himself did not do anything "sensible". Au contraire!.

I thought we as a nation didn't like being told what to do to the extent, being bloody minded, we would do precisely the opposite. But now we are being lectured to by a bunch
of condescending public sector workers (with Health & Safety Certificates, having done the requisite training) who have suddenly decided that we are incapable of making judgement about our own lifestyles.

And what do we do about it?

..Crack a can and say, "Cheers, I'll drink to that!" In that we are a United Kingdom.
