Recruiting the Dead to The Cause

Ted Hughes was a prophet of climate change | Ben Macintyre - Times Online

A campaign is under way to have Hughes roost among his peers in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey. He deserves to be there, not just for the raw, evocative brilliance of his poetry, but also for his prescience in addressing the single most urgent issue of our age: climate change, man-made pollution, and the looming fear that the globe is not working as it did.

Hughes was an old fashioned environmentalist railing against pollution, loss of habitats and natural landscapes. The sort of environmentalism that has been sidelined by the gadarene groupies of global warming. He might well have joined in if he were alive, but he isn't and didn't.

"single most urgent issue of our age: climate change, man-made pollution, and the looming fear that the globe is not working as it did."

That's three. The Times cannot count. But what a bizarre notion that the globe must sit in some arbitrary supposed optimum. The impression that things are not what they once were is down to climate scientists picking basis periods for their measurements. They have not picked them because that was an agreed optimum but because that is when they have a credibly complete coverage of data. Before and after it is absolutely crap with weather stations dropping off after the end of the Cold War and divining temperatures from trees and mud beforehand.
