RSPB's tips on how to stop your cat making a meal of birds in your garden
According to the RSPB, 27 million birds are killed every year in this country by the 7.2 million cats UK residents keep as pets. That means our feline companions are supplementing the £829m we spend on cat food every year with their own avian breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The charity admits that while there is evidence that cats tend to take weak or sickly birds, there is no scientific proof that predation by cats in gardens is having any impact on bird populations.

27 million birds gone but of course they aren't going to make tibby owning donors feel guilty...
The tips are useless, of course, no where do they discuss if a 9mm or .410 garden gun is better...

So 7.2m cats are only getting 27m birds per year?

I think we need to get some better cats. They're certainly not worth £829m a year if they can each only catch one bird every three months or so.

My cats insist on 7.62 FMJ, I keep telling them it's sheer overkill, but the little bastards just won't listen.

I have found that a crossbow launching 10" steel quarrels is most efficacious in terminating feline avian predation; it has the beneficial side effect of reducing substantially the amount of cat shit deposited in my seed beds.
Handy hint - feline carcasses interred in the compost heap serve to enrich the finished product, especially if co-interred with the corpses of the ubiquitous flying rats.

as a matter of interest how many birds are killed by birds?
