If Only

This was Winston’s unfittest hour | The Sunday Times

Private notes kept by Churchill’s doctor reveal how the prime minister’s work and character declined under the strain of war.

The previously confidential records reveal a leader whose work deteriorated and whose character suffered because of “years of stress” that left him with “an intolerance of criticism and bad temper”.
Churchill’s decline was exacerbated because he “never nursed his physique” and failed to “listen to advice”, according to Lord Moran, his personal doctor for 25 years.

Just think what he could have achieved if he had eaten his five a day and laid off the baccy and booze. Can you imagine him in lycra grinning like a loon as he cycled to Parliament. Thank goodness today's leaders listen to their quacks and aren't like him.

Firstly, Churchill lived to be 90: a far better determiner of his wellbeing than the opinion of any doctor. Perhaps the doctor gave Churchill advice on lifestyle that led to this "intolerance of criticism and bad temper": that surely sets us all a good example.

Secondly, he was a physically courageous man who offered himself for what he believed in: witness particularly his escapades as a journalist in South Africa and his WW1 service after the Dardanelles campaign.

Fortune favours the brave; who dares wins, etc.

IMHO he would have viewed his prime ministerial service as comparatively free of physical risk (beyond assassination).

Is it not good that our political leaders should be willing to sacrifice their wellbeing for the common good of the nation.

And if (in national extremis) they are unwilling, should we not require that they do so: or go?

Best regards

Well at least he had the good sense to ignore the men in white coats.

This is news?

FFS! Whose bloody quack doesn't nag them about nursing their physique and listening to advice?

Take that Whatshisname Bolt character, the dark chappie who runs like an illegal immigrant pursued by the Fearsome Hounds of Remittance, for instance. I'll bet even his personal physician never lets an opportunity to lecture him on "healthy lifestyles" go by.

You forgot the obligatory "Hitler was a vegetarian." :)
