Can you help the Met Office know what the weather is?

Met Office: Weather stations

Do you have a weather station at home?
We’re planning to enhance our weather observations network by inviting everyone who has a personal weather station, manual or automatic, to send your data to a new website.
We hope this will appeal to schools, amateur meteorologists, and weather enthusiasts across the UK.
This extra data will be extremely useful in monitoring localised extreme weather events such as heavy snow and rain. This Weather Observations Website, which is being produced by the Met Office in partnership with the Royal Meteorological Society, should be launched in early 2011.

I just need a USB connection to the hank of seaweed hanging outside the office door and I'm fit to help them out....

Er? Who will vet these sites to make sure the rain guages aren't under carports or directly beneath overflow spouts? More importantly who will check that thermometers aren't placed in the middle of asphalt driveways or right next to central heating flues?

The Met Office can issue all sorts of guidelines about proper placement and so on, but many members of the public are inherently thick and if there is a way to stuff something up, they will find it. You can also bet that they will ignore or get wrong instructions about proper calibration.

Even before you take account of those people so driven by the climate agenda the will deliberately falsify recordings, you can guarantee that all the Met Office will gain out of this is a mass of useless data.

Alternatively the Met Office could go to wunderground.com where they'll find a lot of this amateur data already without spunking loads of public money on a new website.

If you've seen any of the surveys of amazingly bad US weather station locations (www.surfacestations.org) you'll know that's irrelevant to the warmists. They'll take (and abuse) any data they can get their hands on.
