72-year-old shopkeeper held after stabbing to death robber - Telegraph

Cecil Coley, 72, is in police custody today after dramatic scenes at a florists on Shewsbury Street, Old Trafford, at 9.40pm last night.
It is understood the shop was closed at the time and Mr Coley, a well-known Jamaican man known as 'Papa' in the community, was playing dominoes with a friend inside when two men armed with guns broke in.
A struggle followed which saw one of the raiders, a 30-year-old man, fatally stabbed in the chest.
Residents found him lying in the street outside and tried to resuscitate him but he died a short time later after being taken to Trafford General Hospital.
A second man, who was wearing a mask, was seen running away from the premises.
It is thought he went to Manchester Royal Infirmary later where he was treated for a stab wound.

In a just world he would be only held in police custody long enough for the boys in blue to get a few pizzas and cases of Red Stripe in and get the celebration party started.

Does "reasonable force" not apply in Manchester?

"Does "reasonable force" not apply in Manchester?"

Only if it was done with sharpened rose stalk.

If the facts are as you describe them, it is hard to imagine a more domestic scene than a pensioner playing dominoes. As to the perps, who commits an armed robbery on a florists? I only hope that the guy did not administer the fatal blow outside the shop because that tends to excite the CPS.

If this ever gets to court, one can only hope for a sensible jury, but the message is clear ~ the state has a monopoly on violence.

Given that it's Manchester, I wonder if he's in custody for his own protection?

The government keep making noises about people being able to defend themselves but over and over again the police treat the householder (or shopkeeper in this case) as a criminal rather than a victim and lock them up for long periods whilst the investigation takes place. I have never heard of a police officer being arrested and locked up after killing someone, they seem to be allowed to stay free and make sure all their colleagues tell the same story.

However obvious a case is just self defence, the police seem to go out of their way to try and make a case of manslaughter or worse out of them.

There usually seems little chance of them absconding so it is hard to understand why they should be detained for so long.

You brought a smile to my world today
