We couldn't send in troops any longer, we haven't got any since the defence cutting started and those we do have are in other parts of the world. As for the St John, the voluntary organisations are also struggling for members, so don't count on them either ...
A good reminder though, these "extreme" events have been happening for a long time - even before Greenpeace and others 'discovered' climate change.
And a few months later, there was the great North Sea storm of 1953, which killed hundreds. If these events happened in such close succession nowadays, no doubt we'd have climatologists muttering about man-made global warming and "loading the dice".
